t’s the strangest thing. Before I got my kidney transplant, I wasn’t huge on sweets. I could have a slice of cake here and there, but I could do without it. I was more of a meat and potatoes type of girl.
My brother, on the other hand, has always loved candy and cake and other sugary treats. He takes good care of himself and is physically fit, but sweets are his weakness.
Believe it or not, after my brother donated one of his kidneys to me, I developed an insatiable desire for all things sweet. After my surgery, I made my mom go to Cinnabon and buy me a 12 pack of cinnamon buns. I ate then all in about 4-5 days.
Since then, I love sugary everything. There are foods and drinks that I previously had no desire to try, but that changed after that transplant.
As the pounds began packing on, I knew that it was time to look for alternatives. The traditional sweeteners that I tried all had a strange aftertaste or had ingredients that in them that I didn’t like.
This summer, I came across a sweetener that changed my life.
This sugar I speak of is Monkfruit Sugar.
Before trying it, I did some research on it to ensure that it was the right thing for me. The only side effect I found about this sugar is that it can cause headaches if consumed in large quantities. I use it to sweeten my coffee, oatmeal, and baking. It would be impossible to consume an amount significant enough to cause any side effects.
This too-good-to-be-true sweetener is suitable for people with diabetes and those on low-carb diets. It doesn’t have the bitter aftertaste and other sugar substitutes have. Monkfruit sugar is a miracle sugar for those of us trying to watch what we eat.
One downside is the fact that this sugar isn’t cheap. I am the only one in my household that uses the sugar (my boyfriend uses it once in a while, but he mainly sticks to regular sugar), so it lasts a long time.
